SPACE CLEARING FAQs

What is space clearing and how can it help me?

Space clearing is, quite simply, the psychic or energetic spring cleaning of a building or space or any defined area. Most people would agree that it's a good idea to clean/dust/hoover/tidy-up their living and working space every now and again. Similarly, it can make sense to clear up the atmosphere/psychic cobwebs/negative imprints and energies from your living and working space periodically.

I would advise a space clearing any time you purchase or move into a new property, business or space. This will help you to make a fresh start, help imprint your own, positive energies onto your immediate environment and prevent you from being affected by any lingering negativity from the past.

It is also beneficial to have a space clearing at the turn of every season, just to maintain positivity and to clear up any ongoing negativity build-up.

Sometimes, clients approach me for a space clearing if they think their home or business is haunted or contains an unwanted 'ghostly presence'. Whether or not there is a genuine haunting in such circumstances, the clients have reported that they are no longer troubled by negative atmospheres/'ghosts' after I have performed the clearing.

IS SPACE CLEARING THE SAME AS EXORCISM? WILL IT INVOLVE YOU USING NIGHT VISION CAMERAS, TAKING TEMPERATURE READINGS AND SHRIEKING MELODRAMATICALLY IN THE MANNER OF YVETTE FIELDING?

No. The performing of exorcism is a hugely controversial issue, even within the Catholic Church and other religions which practise some form of it. In the vast majority of cases, I don't think it is wise to assume that a person or a building is possessed by a demon or evil spirit (or anything else, for that matter!) On the whole, blaming a demon or possession is a useful mechanism for abdicating personal responsibility for one's actions or behaviour.

Again, I'm afraid Hollywood and TV have a lot to answer for. I happen to think that The Exorcist movie and the novel it is based on are excellent works of art. They also happen to be bunkum and bear little relation to the reality of the spirit world that I know. (For a far more nuanced cinematic approach to the subject, I'd suggest you check out The Exorcism of Emily Rose. An equally thoughtful novelistic approach to exorcism can be found in the works of Phil Rickman.)

I also have several bones to pick with TV programmes like Most Haunted which seem to have overrun many satellite channels in the UK in recent years. Ghosthunting and ghostbusting shows that make liberal use of eerie night vision cameras, excitable presenters, minor celebrities and portentous celebrity psychics are emphatically in the entertainment business. They exist to titillate, to exploit popular fears about hauntings, ghosts and ghoulies and to boost ratings. They sensationalize the paranormal in order to make money. I don't believe they serve a useful, practical purpose beyond entertainment. Besides, iconic 70s/80s children's show Rentaghost is far superior entertainment with less melodrama.

The kind of space clearing I perform again has as its basis the universal, powerful energy of unconditional LOVE. I use smudge sticks in the manner of many Native American traditions. I chant some mantras and hymns in the manner of Hindu and Buddhist and Wiccan practices. I 'heal' spaces by sending loving energy into them - much in the same way as I heal people. In other words, I perform my own brand of space clearing.

I do not use (or know) the Roman ritual. I have no interest in demons or evil spirits. And I absolutely DO NOT prance around ghostbusting like the Most Haunted crew seem to week after week....
